Imagineering your dreams
Hi, I’m Koen Beliën. Nice to meet you! Are you and your team bursting with creative ideas for your next performance or production, but still looking for that illusive creative all-rounder with a wealth of knowledge in the technical side of theatre who can make these ideas reality?
As founder of @Vision, I am offering services as technical consultancy and production management for large scale theatre productions or live entertainment events with complex sets, automation and innovative technologies.
As a Technical Director and Design Engineer, I devise technically feasible solutions for producers and clients in the live entertainment industry. As a Technical Stage Manager, I’m responsible for what happens on-stage during loadin, rehearsals and shows.
Imagineering = imagination + engineering
@Vision is all about vision, illusion, imagination and fantasy, with a modern touch. As an ‘imagineer’, I turn creative dreams into technical stories. In my work, I act as a link between the producer, the creative team and the technical departments. That’s the way to bring magic to the stage!
I’ve acquired many years of experience for clients, both in Belgium and the wider world. Are you dealing with major theatre productions or live entertainment events with complex sets, automation and innovative technologies? I’m at home with every aspect. Are you working on an intimate performance? We use inventive ideas to immerse your audience in emotion.
Education and experience
In 2005, I followed the Arts of Theatre Technologies course in Antwerp, Belgium. I combined this with an internship at the municipal theatre Stadsschouwburg Antwerp, one of the largest theatres in Europe. By combining my studies with an internship where I had ample contact with unique techniques and major theatre, ballet and musical productions, I was able to shape my skills in theatre techniques. After completing my course, I immediately started working as an assistant stage manager at Stadsschouwburg Antwerp. Together with the stage manager and technical director, I was responsible for the technical aspects of storytelling in the productions.
As Head of Flywall, for example, I was in charge of all the scenery components hoisted vertically. I also made cue lists and trained technicians to become experienced flywall operators. In this context, I worked on renowned performances such as The Sound of Music, Elisabeth, Roman Polanski’s Dance of the Vampires and Cameron Mackintosh’s Oliver! In 2011, I was promoted to technical director and stage manager at the Stadsschouwburg. I was responsible for the technical implementation of guest productions, as well as the entire technical pre-production process of the municipal theatre’s in-house performances. I worked closely with producers, directors and designing teams and was responsible for the smooth running of rehearsals and shows like Shrek, Assepoester, het tamelijk ware verhaal (a version of Cinderella) and hi-tech musicals such as Ben X and We Will Rock You.
In 2014, I started my own company. As a technical director, stage manager and design engineer, I help producers and clients in the live entertainment industry with @Vision. For example, I’ve been responsible for projects such as Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Wizard of Oz, the site-specific theatre Flanders Fields, intimate tour productions such as Piaf and War of the Roses and grandiose musicals such as Mozart! During QingShow, I worked for 13 months on a major extravaganza about Chinese mythology called The Eight Immortals. Packed with acrobatics, special effects, automation and innovative technologies, this performance was created in a specially designed theatre in Qingdao, China.
